Somerville Public Schools

October News

From the Superintendent JR Lubisco

Dear Somerville Family,

Here is what’s happening:

📑 Curriculum Audit

In August, consultants Ron Bolandi and Michael Dzwonar conducted a comprehensive curriculum audit for our district. The results, presented at the October 15th Board of Education meeting, have the full backing of the Board, which is committed to implementing the recommendations.

  • The audit offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on our educational practices and make improvements that will drive our district forward.

    • Access the Audit Presentation here and the Audit Recommendations here..

  • At the November 12th Board meeting, I will deliver the State of the District address, where we’ll review the audit findings and discuss actionable steps.

  • Together, we aim to ensure every student in Somerville Public Schools receives an exceptional education and is fully prepared for a bright future.

♥️ Week of Respect Recap

Our district recently celebrated the Week of Respect with a range of meaningful, age-appropriate activities across all schools.

  • Students participated in initiatives centered on social and emotional learning (SEL), emphasizing kindness, empathy, and inclusivity.

  • These activities aim to create a positive school environment and help prevent bullying, harassment, and intimidation.

  • By focusing on SEL, we’re reinforcing key values that contribute to a more supportive and respectful community for all students.

  • Share collective data with staff and constituent groups

  • Develop a common understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges

  • Create actionable strategies that are innovative, accountable, and well-communicated

Special Services News

On Thursday, October 10th the Department of Special Services in collaboration with SEPAG (Special Education Parent Advisory Group) presented a workshop on support services available under the umbrellas of general education and special education.  The workshop, presented by Mrs. Turnbull and Dr. McDonald, walked parents through the process of securing supports for struggling learners. Different intervention programs as well as a review of the special education classification process were discussed.  If you have concerns about the academic, social, emotional, or behavioral needs of your child, please start by  reaching out to the classroom teacher.  Your child's teacher will be happy to discuss potential support services.
