From the Superintendent JR Lubisco

Dear Somerville Family,

Here is what’s happening:

☃️ Winter Recess- Early Dismissal and School Closing

Wishing you and your families a joyful and restful Winter Recess!

  • Friday, December 20th is an Early Dismissal day.

  • School is closed from December 23rd through January 1st.

📚 New Director of Curriculum

I’m pleased to announce that Mary Kane began as the new Director of Curriculum. Ms. Kane is a seasoned educator and leader, and we are thrilled to have her join our district.

🎯 State of the District Presentation Milestones

I want to share updates on the progress we’re making to align with the goals outlined in my State of the District address. These efforts reflect our commitment to addressing the findings from the curriculum audit and ensuring every student receives a high-quality education:

  • Curriculum Inventory: We’re conducting a grade-level review to identify all instructional resources and materials in use.

  • Utilization Assessment: Evaluations are underway to ensure curriculum consistency and effectiveness across classrooms.

  • ELA Meetings: Focused sessions in January will address findings and set goals for English Language Arts (ELA).

  • Program and Application Analysis: We’re digging into whether challenges stem from program design, implementation, or other factors.

  • Data and Standards Alignment: Teams are actively gathering data to align curriculum with state standards and district priorities.

Congratulations to Our Educators of the Year

Each year school districts from around the state, including the Somerville School District, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education, recognizes the outstanding dedication and accomplishments of educators in our schools through a program called the Governor’s Educator Of the Year.  As a result, schools are asked to select a Teacher of the Year AND an Educational Services Professional of the Year such as counselor, school psychologist or instructional assistant to name a few. These individuals must be exceptionally skilled educators who motivate and inspire you, our students, and who build strong cultures of respect and success within our community.
